Jamaica

Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, what are you heading for?

When is this period of crime, violence, lack of respect for human life going to end? When are we going to come to our senses? When do we reclaim the Jamaica I grew up in, one of beauty, peace and love? The Jamaica that used to exist? Where our people were warm and friendly?

I wish I could express the pain that I feel each day that I hear and read about what is taking place here. I can only feel the heaviness in my heart. BTW, my businessplace is the one mentioned on May 2.

THE DEADLY tentacles of extortionists snuffed out the life of prominent May Pen businessman Maurice Azan and his stepson Lloyd Phang.

Both were killed after gunmen attacked and shot the pair at their business place, Azan's One Stop, on Saturday. Mr. Azan died at the May Pen Hospital moments after being shot, while Mr. Phang succumbed to his injuries yesterday. It is alleged that the men were killed because they, unlike several other business operators in the area, refused to pay extortionists the 'protection money' they demanded.

Brazen attacks - Three cops, two guards slaughtered
published: Thursday | May 5, 2005

THE POLICE yesterday linked the brutal killings, which claimed the lives of three policemen and two security guards in the Corporate Area, to the recent killing of a popular Kingston don.

While the nation expressed outrage, Prime Minister P.J. Patterson and private sector officials have condemned the brazen attacks on members of the security forces, declaring that the fight against crime and violence must remain on track.

"We must not give up the fight for what is good and right," declared the Prime Minister. "We will conquer this evil in our midst."

The trail of killings across the Corporate Area did not result in a lockdown of business in the commercial district, airports or seaports. There was also no threat to tourists and other visitors to the island.

FOUR PERSONS were killed, three by gunmen and one fatally stabbed, in separate incidents in Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth and St. James on the weekend.

Two of the victims are unidentified while the others have been named as 43-year-old Gilbert Hibbert, of Slipe Road in Kingston, and Nicholas Pike, a 30-year-old vendor of Hopewell, Hanover.

On Saturday afternoon three gunmen abducted a taxi operator and a male passenger in Ironshore, St. James before killing the unidentified passenger.

GUNS BRANDISHED

Police reports are that about 2:00 p.m. four men boarded a taxi in Montego Bay for Lilliput. During the journey, one of the men asked the driver to take him to a location off the route.

He and two others subsequently pulled guns and ordered the driver from around the steering wheel. It is said that one of the gunmen then drove the vehicle to Hatfield Meadows in Ironshore where they handcuffed the driver and the fourth man together.

Two of the men drove away in the car and left their third crony at the scene. They later returned, released their victims and fired several shots before the three of them escaped on foot.

The driver was unharmed but his passenger was hit by bullets and died on the spot.

The gunmen are suspected of robbing an undetermined sum of money and valuables from a business place during the time they had their victims bound.
