Gleanings From The Word

Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary Life

Three Little Words

I confess that the idea for this morning's message came from a sermon I heard recently. It wasn't the main thrust of the sermon, more of a sidebar, but I thought there was a lot of truth contained in that brief sidebar. There are three wonderful little words that we don't hear often enough in the church.

The words have deep meaning and can be taken the wrong way, so before you make your mind up about them, I ask that you read the entire message.

Yesterday, I spoke of the fact that life can be bitter and disappointing. That's no surprise. We all have times when life throws us a curve. We all carry the baggage from unfair treatment, from the things other people have said and done, and from hard circumstances. That's why these three little words are so important.

What are those valuable little words?

GET OVER IT!

Now before you get upset and think I'm being harsh and uncompassionate, let me qualify that statement and then explain it.

There is a time and a place for mourning. There is reality to the fact that the circumstances of our past shape us. I'm not trying to belittle whatever it is you've been through. We all have pain that we carry and need to deal with. We need to be compassionate towards others and to help them through the pain.

The key is that we need to deal with it, not just carry it and use it as a crutch.

We have great tools to "get over it" as Christians

We are made new

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

We are forgiven

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 NIV

We are Holy Spirit filled

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession--to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:13-14 NIV

We' re born again.

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God 1 Peter 1:23 NIV

We are equipped to do it

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work 2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV

May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21 NIV

We're told to do it.

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. 1 Peter 1:22 NIV

But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Colossians 3:8 NIV

So, knowing that we're called of God, made new by God and equipped by God, look at the things that have held you back and get over it.

Let go of the bitterness, anger, envy and resentment and replace them with joy, love, peace and contentment. Lay the past at the foot of the throne and move on.

Until next time, may you have the courage to give it to God and get over it.

Be blessed

Hallelu Yah
