Gleanings From The Word

Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary Life

Tears

I was busy running a cable from the basement through to the main floor of our house. I stopped for a moment and poured myself a tall glass of cold water half full of ice cubes. Just then the telephone rang and I was side tracked for ten minutes or so. I returned for my drink and noticed the condensation running down the outside of my glass. It looked like the glass was crying.

There's nothing wrong with tears. People mourn, they regret, they feel joy, they hurt on the inside and when they do, tears often follow. Tears are, in fact, a very human thing. To my knowledge, no other creature on the face of the earth expresses its emotion with tears.

Men and women both cry (contrary to the widely help opinion, there is no reason for men not to cry). I struggled a long time after receiving my head injury because many things made me cry that would never have even impacted me. I grew up believing "real men" don't cry, and to be sitting watching the movie Lion King and crying over the death of the father lion was most definitely not cool. I've come to tears with it now, but it was a struggle for a while (the crying that is, I know Lion King was only a movie so the lion didn't really die).

Sometimes a good old-fashioned cry can be therapeutic for men and women. Guys, pay attention here, women clued into that fact a long time ago, we need to learn from them.

I don't think anyone can honestly characterise Jesus as weak and He cried.

He wept over the coming destruction of Jerusalem

As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you." Luke 19:41-44 NIV

He wept over the death of His friend Lazarus

When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. "Where have you laid him?" he asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" John 11:32-36 NIV

He wept about the prospect of being separated from Father (The English here doesn't do justice to what was happening. If you read the Greek, there is much more of a sense of Jesus throwing Himself on the ground weeping and wailing. )

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." Matthew 26:36-39 NIV

People often cry at church or when being caught in sin. Sometimes though, they are like my glass of water, crying on the outside but still cold in the center. Their tears aren't true tears of brokenness and their hearts remain frozen towards God.

Tears are human, they're natural but they don't get us into heaven. All the tears in the world won't change the heart of God towards your sin. The only thing that will make a difference is a warming of your heart and the acceptance of His forgiveness.

Maybe you've cried over your mistakes and sins, but have you ever truly given them to God? If not, it's time to do that. If so, rejoice in the wonderful blessing of His forgiveness and love.

Until next time, let the tears flow when they need to.

Be blessed.

Hallelu Yah (Praise God)!
