Gleanings From The Word

Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary Life

The Hinge

It was cold, wet and miserable out. The plan was to stop at an abandoned cabin about halfway along the route. It wasn't much but it would be dry and we would be able to have a fire to get warm by and cook over.

It seemed to take forever to get there, each step was misery. What a delight it was to see the cabin finally come into our view. We quickened our pace, and the cold and wet were gone from our mind.

We grabbed on the door and pulled. Nothing happened. We tried again and again. Still nothing, the hinges were rusted shut. Fortunately, one of us was just small enough to barely squeeze through the window. He found a part tin of motor oil and poured it on the hinges. The combination of the oil, our pulling and his pushing allowed the door to open enough to squeeze through.

If you'll excuse an obvious pun, our ability to get dry and warm hinged on the fact that we could get into the building. If we hadn't been able to get in, we would have continued to be very wet and miserable.

Hinges are important things. Without them, it would be difficult to open or close the doors to many things which would complicate life.

There is another meaning though for the word hinge. "That on which anything turns or depends; a governing principle; a cardinal point or rule; as, this argument was the hinge on which the question turned."

There is a hinge to eternal life. All of us are born dead in our sin, but we can change that and be reborn. The hinge is our acceptance or rejection of Jesus Christ. Reject Him and we stay spiritually dead and under the condemnation of God. Accept Him and our sins are forgiven and we will spend eternity with Him free from His wrath.

Our eternal destiny hinged on many events.

God had to love us enough to send His Son

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." John 3:16-21 NIV

Christ had to be obedient and go to the cross.

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! Philippians 2:8 NIV

Someone had to share the Gospel with us.

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" Romans 10:14-15 NIV

You and I may be the very hinge to someone's eternal destiny. We're called to tell others about Christ, we're called to walk the talk and we’re called to obey. Will you? Or will things come unhinged you?

God's plan is big enough to work around our individual mistakes, but never doubt that a lot hinges on our individual choice to be obedient or to disobey.

Until next time, rejoice in the obedience of the person (or persons) whose actions pointed you in the direction of Jesus.

Be blessed.

Hallelu Yah (Praise God)!

YOU ARE

Once you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are yoked to Jesus

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

Never let the enemy tell you that you are worthless or insignificant. You have value in the eyes of God so great that it was worth dying for. You are a blessing to the world.

Did you know that your destiny in eternity hinges on you? Jesus has freely offered forgiveness and eternal life with Him to anyone who would accept Him. The other choice is eternal separation from Him and condemnation. Your future, your choice, which will it be?

If you haven't made the decision to accept Christ as Lord
