White Rabbits
Genni the wonder dog and I were out walking around the lake the other
night and spotted a rabbit. It was a typical snowshoe rabbit (North American
Varying Hare), white in color for winter protection from predators.
As soon as it saw us, it did what rabbits will do, and sat perfectly
still to make itself invisible. It would normally be a great tactic except
for this time the rabbit was sitting in an area with no snow cover. White
rabbits don't hide well on brown ground.
Genni barked and the chase would have been on, except I keep her on a
leash. She thinks it's her duty to protect the world from fierce threats like
rabbits, squirrels and cats, although I think she'd be in for a rude
awakening if she were ever allowed to actually chase them and caught one.
The rabbit bolted out of sight around a bend. We rounded the bend a few
moments later and the rabbit froze in place again. It was still in an area
with no snow cover so it still stuck out like the metaphorical sore thumb. If
we don't soon get some snow cover, I'm afraid our rabbit population will take
a big dip.
All the camouflage in the world isn't of any help if it's the wrong
kind and makes you stick out instead of blending in.
Christians often rely on camouflage. We justify our sin by thoughts
like "everyone else does it"; surely God didn't mean it when He told us not
to; it's just a small sin and similar rationalizations. Sometimes we're
careful to go where no one will see us sinning. After all if no one knows
it's not a problem, right?
It's nothing short of incredible how far we'll go to deceive others,
God and ourselves. Anything except the truth will do in a pinch.
People have even stretched to try and use justification as weak as:
"I'm building a testimony" or "I want to witness to these people so I have to
(insert the sin) too!" I've even heard of adulterous affairs justified by
"God brought us together in church so it must be okay."
The reality is that we might fool other people, although we'll be
worried about the nagging question "what if they find out?" We might fool
ourselves, and even buy into our own lies. We’ll never fool God. No amount of
camouflage can keep us from the ever-vigilant eyes of the Lord. We're even
less hidden than a white rabbit on brown ground.
O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my
ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. You hem
me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge
is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from
your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the
heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I
rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even
there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say,
"Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,"
even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the
day, for darkness is as light to you. For you created my inmost being; you
knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully
and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My
frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I
was woven together in the depths of the earth, for darkness is as light to
you.
Psalm 139:1-15 NIV
On the other hand, nothing can ever keep our needs out of the eyes of
God. He knows what we truly need even when we don't recognize it. He knows
what we truly need, even when we don't want to admit it. He knows what we
truly need when the Prince of this world tries to hide it from God's sight.
Until next time, rejoice in the fact that there is nothing that God
does not see. He sees the deeds done in darkness, so we might as well confess
them and give them up and He sees the needs that are hidden so we can trust
Him to provide. Either way, nothing can keep Him from seeing and knowing what
is best. For that give Him praise and glory.
Be blessed.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)!
